Specific Features of Mobile Phones

(Which phone to buy if you need a specific feature)

Caller ID - Know who's calling you before you answer the phone

Only the Orange Mobile Phone Network currently supports Caller ID in the UK. All of their phones except one supports this extremely useful feature. When the phone starts ringing, the screen displays the caller's phone number &, if known, the caller's name on the Nokia's, Ericsson and Dancall. You are then given the option of either answering the phone or diverting the call to your answerphone.

Even better, the last 5 or 10 calls that you missed are stored in the phone's memories - no more reaching the phone just as it rings off, and then wondering who called you! The Ericsson er100 even tells you what time you missed the call!

Personalised Answerphone - "Thank you for calling Mobile Comms."

Most networks (not Vodafone Analogue) offer you the facility of recording your own personalised answerphone message as in the above header. Orange and Mercury 121 offer much cheaper access to the answerphone than Cellnet or Vodafone.

Vodafone's analogue answering service is restricted to a computer generated "Thank you for calling 0374-123456" and is extremely expensive to use. :-(

Free Calls - Weekend & Any Time of the Day

Only one network provides truly free calls, Mercury one2one. They offer free weekend-only local calls on all their tariffs. The advantage compared to Orange is that there is no limit on the number of free calls you make - ideal for teenage children!.

Orange offer a limited number of free calls every month depending on the tariff you opt for. E.g. Talk 60 at 25 pounds a month give you 60 minutes of free calls every month. The advantage over Mercury 121 is that the calls can be made at any time of the day or night and can be local or national.

Phone use abroad

Currently only GSM phones available through Vodafone and Cellnet offer a full roaming facility. Roaming is a method by which phones scan the airwaves loking for a friendly network to hook into. While roaming is available throughout Europe and parts of Asia & Africa, it also depends on your Service Provider actually having a Roaming agreement in each particular country you wish to visit.

Orange is the first of the PCN networks to offer roaming. Germany came online on 14th March 1996 with other European countries being promised during the latter part of the year.

Mobile Data & Fax

Nokia is the only way to go for fast and efficient data & fax while on the move. The GSM Nokia 2110, PCN Nokia 2140 and Nokia 5.1 are all capable of 9600 bps transfer rates.

To get connected with a Nokia mobile phone you will also need a PCMCIA Data Card to link your mobile phone with your notebook computer. Prices are normally around the 400ukp + VAT mark but currently Orange have an offer for business users whereby the Data Card can be obtained for a final price of 199 ukp!
